Thailand's Most Famous Waterfall

Erawan Falls Day Trip from Bangkok, What to Expect

Seven tiers of turquoise water cascading down limestone. Swimming pools at each tier. The hike to the top takes about 90 minutes. It's beautiful, and it's crowded by 9am on weekends. before you go.

Alone at Tier 7 - The Climb Worth Doing

The climb from tier 6 to tier 7 is steep - 30 minutes of limestone steps with a rope handrail. I did it in July 2024. By tier 5, most visitors had turned back. By tier 6, I was alone on the path. At the summit: a small shrine, a deep clear pool, and silence - just water and jungle sounds. Fish were nibbling my feet within seconds of stepping in. The waterfall at tier 7 is smaller than the lower tiers but the solitude is the point. Most tour groups only get 2 hours at Erawan, which gets you through tiers 1–4. If you want the top tier, book a tour that gives you 3+ hours or come independently.

Erawan Falls Day Trip from Bangkok

Seven tiers, swimming at each level, the hike to the summit. Round-trip transport from Bangkok included, you just show up.

Why it made the cut: Erawan's tier 4 pools are the best natural swimming within day-trip range of Bangkok - I've done this hike in both dry and wet season and tier 4 alone justifies the 3-hour drive.

Why the 6am Departure Matters

I learned this lesson at Damnoen Saduak but it applies to Erawan Falls the same way. At 7:15am on the floating market canal: wooden paddlers, morning light, maybe 30 tourists. At 10am the same day: 200+ tourists, motorboats churning brown water, every vendor selling the same elephant-print pants. Same place, different experience. Erawan Falls follows the same rule. Arrive at 8am on a weekday and tier 1 is quiet, the water is still, you can swim without dodging selfie sticks. Arrive at 10:30am on a Saturday and you're sharing the lowest pool with 150 other people. The difference between a good Erawan experience and a bad one is the departure time. Book the earliest pickup your tour offers.

The 7 tiers: what to expect at each level

Tier 1: The biggest swimming area and the most crowded. Wide pools, easy access, safe for children. Most visitors spend the most time here.

Tiers 2–3: Smaller pools, more rocks. Quieter than tier 1, especially in the morning. Good swimming spots if tier 1 is too busy.

Top-rated Kanchanaburi River Kwai experience

Tiers 4–5: More secluded. The path narrows and gets steeper. These tiers feel wilder, less manicured, more atmosphere. Good spots to get away from crowds.

Tier 6: A long staircase climb from tier 5. The water flow thins here in dry season. rewarding view if you've made it this far.

Tier 7 (summit): A small shrine and a view over the park. Underwhelming in dry season when water flow is low. Most impressive after rain when the water's running hard. May be closed in green season, check on arrival.

What to bring

Water shoes (non-negotiable): The rocks are extremely slippery. Flip-flops are a hazard. You need shoes with grip that can get wet, old sandals with heel straps work, but dedicated water shoes are better.

Towel: Large enough to dry off after swimming at multiple tiers. You'll want to move between swimming and sunbathing.

Dry bag or waterproof phone pouch: You will get splashed near the falls. The mist alone is enough to worry about your phone. A 10-litre dry bag is cheap and effective.

Change of clothes: You'll want dry clothes for the drive back to Bangkok, 3 hours in wet clothes isn't comfortable.

Cash: 300 baht park entry for foreign nationals (2026 rate). More for motorcycles (approximately 30 baht) and cars (approximately 50 baht). Card payment is not reliable at the gate, bring baht.

Sunscreen: Apply before you enter the park. Spray sunscreen is not allowed inside, you must apply it at the entrance or before arrival.

Insect repellent: Mosquitoes are more present near the lower tiers, especially in the morning. DEET-based repellent works, but apply it before you enter, not inside the park.

When to go

Weekday mornings are best. Arriving at opening time (8am) gives you 1–2 hours before the tour buses arrive. By 10:30am on a weekday the lower tiers are noticeably busier.

Weekends and public holidays, avoid if possible. Thai visitors flock here on weekends. By 9am tier 1 is packed. The experience is still beautiful but it's a different atmosphere.

Green season (June–October): The waterfall looks most impressive in October and November after the wet season. Tier 7 may be closed due to safety. Water flow at the lower tiers is strong. The tradeoff is afternoon rain, bring rain gear for the journey.

Dry season (November–May): Easier logistics, tier 7 usually open, less rain. But water flow is visibly lower and the lower tiers can look a bit thin. March–April are the toughest months.

The Cheap Tour That Wasn't Cheap

March 2024. I booked a floating market tour for 700 baht - about $20. The minivan pulled into a gem factory at 7:45am. Everyone looked confused. Twenty minutes in a showroom being shown sapphires. Then a coconut sugar 'workshop' that was just a shop. We reached the market at 10:30am. Peak crowds, peak heat, terrible experience. The lesson applies to Erawan Falls tours: if a Kanchanaburi tour is cheaper than others, read the itinerary. The discount comes from somewhere - usually shopping stops that eat 40–60 minutes of your day. On a day trip where you're already spending 6 hours in transit, those lost minutes matter. Pay the extra $10–15 for a tour with no stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get to Erawan Falls from Kanchanaburi town?

Most tours include transport from Bangkok, stopping in Kanchanaburi town before heading to the falls, about 50 km north. If you're already in Kanchanaburi, you can hire a songthaew (shared pickup truck) from the town centre. Expect around 300–400 baht for a return trip, or negotiate with a local driver for a full day.

Are the upper tiers of Erawan Falls open during green season?

It varies. Heavy rain can raise water levels and make the upper tiers unsafe to access. Tier 7 in particular is often closed during and after periods of heavy rain. Check with park rangers on arrival, they'll advise based on current conditions. The lower tiers (1–4) are almost always open regardless of season.

Is Erawan Falls suitable for young children?

Yes, with caveats. Tier 1 has the largest swimming area and is the most child-friendly. The path from tier 1 to tier 4 is relatively manageable. Beyond tier 4, the path becomes noticeably steeper and more uneven, not suitable for toddlers or anyone unsteady on their feet. Bring life jackets for small children; the rocks are slippery even in shallow water.
