The most common way to reach Kanchanaburi from Bangkok is the train from Thonburi Station, costing ฿100–200 and taking 2.5 hours. The bus from Bangkok Southern Terminal (Sai Tai) is similarly priced at ฿150–200 and takes 2–3 hours. Organized tours run ฿1,500–3,500 and handle all logistics door-to-door, which is worth it if you want to combine multiple sites in one day.

By Train, The Budget Option

The route: Bangkok → Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is on the Death Railway (Thailand-Burma Railway) line. The train departs from Thonburi Railway Station (สถานีรถไฟธนบุรี), not the more central Hua Lamphong Station. Thonburi is across the river from central Bangkok.

🚆 Getting to Thonburi Station

  • BTS Skytrain to Wongwian Yai (S6), then taxi (5 min, ฿40–60)
  • Or take the Orange Flag boat from Tha Charoen (river ferry, ฿15) across to Thonburi side, then walk or songthaew
  • Local bus routes 79, 84, 91, 201 also serve the area

🎫 Train tickets and schedule

  • Second-class fan: ฿100–150
  • Second-class air-con: ฿180–200
  • First-class sleeping berths: ฿300–400 (worth it for overnight)
  • Departures: roughly 4–5 trains daily, starting around 7am
  • Book at the station counter, no advance online booking for most classes

The train arrives at Kanchanaburi Railway Station in the town centre, not the Bridge itself. From the station, songthaews (shared pick-up trucks, ฿20–50 per ride) run to the Bridge over the River Kwai and surrounding sites. The train journey is scenic, it passes through rural countryside and crosses the River Kwai itself on the famous railway bridge.

By Bus, The Direct Option

Bangkok Southern Terminal (Sai Tai) → Kanchanaburi

The Sai Tai Mai (Southern Terminal) in Bangkok's Taling Chan district is the departure point for buses to Kanchanaburi. It is not central, allow 45–60 minutes to get there from central Bangkok depending on traffic.

🚌 Bus types and prices

  • Standard (non-air-con): ฿120–150
  • Air-con: ฿150–200
  • VIP/mini-VIP: ฿250–350 (more seat space, fewer stops)
  • Buses leave roughly every 30–60 minutes from 5am to 8pm
  • No advance booking needed, just turn up and board

📍 Getting to Sai Tai Mai

  • MRT Blue Line to Taling Chan station, then taxi or songthaew (10 min)
  • Or BTS to Wongwian Yai, then taxi (25 min)
  • Grab or local taxi from central Bangkok: ฿200–350

The bus drops you at Kanchanaburi Bus Station on Lak Mu Road in the town centre. From there, songthaews to the Bridge (พระราม 8) and Erawan Falls are easy to find. The bus is straightforward but slower than the train in heavy traffic, both take roughly 2.5–3 hours in normal conditions.

By Organized Tour, The All-in-One Option

Tours cost ฿1,500–3,500 per person and include hotel pick-up, transport, and a structured itinerary. The main advantage: you see multiple sites in one day without coordinating local transport. For Erawan Falls especially, which is 65km north of Kanchanaburi town, a tour is more efficient than public transport from Kanchanaburi town.

What most Kanchanaburi day tours include

  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Bangkok (usually 7–8am, returns 6–7pm)
  • Bridge over the River Kwai
  • Death Railway short ride (Hellfire Pass if full-day)
  • Erawan Falls (usually the 4th or 7th tier, depending on tour)
  • Lunch at a local restaurant

Smaller group tours (max 12–15 people) feel more considered than big bus tours. Check the group size before booking, a 45-person coach tour is a very different experience from a minivan with 8 people.

Honest recommendation

If this is your first time to Kanchanaburi and you want to see the Bridge plus Erawan Falls in one day, a small-group tour is the most reliable way to do it. The logistics of coordinating train + songthaew + Erawan Falls from scratch takes time and local knowledge that most visitors don't have on a first trip.

If you've been before or you're on a tight budget, the train is the best best, and you can hire a local songthaew driver at Kanchanaburi station for the day (roughly ฿800–1,200 for a custom itinerary) which is still cheaper than a tour.

When to go matters for transport

Kanchanaburi is busiest on weekends and Thai public holidays, the train and bus fill up, and Erawan Falls gets very crowded by mid-morning. If you can go on a weekday, do. In rainy season (June–October), the road to Erawan Falls can flood, check locally before heading north. The falls themselves look their top in and November after the wet season.

Getting around Kanchanaburi

Once you arrive in Kanchanaburi town, you'll use songthaews (shared pick-up trucks, ฿20–50 per journey) to get between sites. They run on fixed routes and wait until full before departing. For Erawan Falls specifically, you can hire a songthaew for the round trip (roughly ฿800–1,200 for the day, negotiable) rather than relying on public transport.

Motorbike rental is available in Kanchanaburi town (฿250–400 per day) if you hold a licence and are comfortable riding, this gives you the most freedom. The roads are generally reasonable, though the route to Erawan Falls involves some winding mountain sections.

Best All-Rounder

Kanchanaburi Day Tour - Bridge, Railway & Erawan Falls

Covers all three highlights in one day. Small group, air-conditioned minivan, includes lunch and a Death Railway ride. Good pace for first-time visitors.

Why it made the cut: May 2026 - the guide on this tour knew the exact train crossing times at the Death Railway and positioned us on the bridge 5 minutes before it came through. That kind of local knowledge transforms a good itinerary into a great one.

River Kwai Bridge + Erawan Falls Combo

Efficient combination hitting both the historic River Kwai Bridge and Erawan Falls. A long day - 6+ hours of travel included - but the variety makes it worthwhile.

How long does it take to get to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok?

By train: 2.5 hours from Thonburi Station to Kanchanaburi Town. By bus: 2–3 hours from Bangkok Southern Terminal. By organized tour: 2.5–3 hours door-to-door from your hotel, with stops along the way.

Where do I catch the train to Kanchanaburi in Bangkok?

The train to Kanchanaburi departs from Thonburi Railway Station (สถานีรถไฟธนบุรี), not Hua Lamphong. Take the BTS to Wongwian Yai station, then a short taxi or ferry across the river. Alternatively, take local bus 79 or 84 to the station.

Yes, it is one of the most popular day trips from Bangkok. The journey takes 2.5–3 hours each way. You can fit the Bridge over the River Kwai, the Death Railway, and Erawan Falls into a long day, or focus on one or two sites for a more relaxed pace.

The train from Thonburi at 6:45am

I caught the 6:45am train from Thonburi Railway Station to Kanchanaburi in February 2024. The platform was quiet - a few monks in orange robes, a woman selling grilled pork skewers from a styrofoam box. The second-class carriage had wooden seats and open windows. As we crossed the River Kwai on the historic bridge, the train slowed to walking pace and every passenger leaned toward the windows. The steel girders of the bridge are exactly what you'd expect from wartime engineering - functional, heavy, rusted at the joints. The river below was brown and wide. An older Thai man in the seat opposite pointed at the bridge and said one word - 'Death Railway' - and went back to his newspaper. 100 baht for a seat, two and a half hours of rural Thailand, and the bridge itself as the final stop before Kanchanaburi town.

The songthaew negotiation at Kanchanaburi station

I stepped off the train at Kanchanaburi Railway Station in November 2023 and three songthaew drivers converged on me within 30 seconds. They knew I was heading to Erawan Falls - the backpack and the English face gave it away. The first driver quoted 1,500 baht for the round trip. I said 800. He laughed. I walked toward the station exit. He called out 1,000. I said 900 and he nodded. We shook on it. The drive north to Erawan National Park took 90 minutes on a winding mountain road past rubber plantations and small roadside shrines. My driver, a man in his fifties named Somchai, pointed out a monitor lizard crossing the road near the park entrance. When I came back down from the falls four hours later he was asleep in the back of his songthaew with a cloth over his face. He woke up, smiled, and drove me back to town exactly as agreed.

Taking the bus to Kanchanaburi in March heat

March 2025. I decided to try the bus from Sai Tai Mai to Kanchanaburi instead of the train. 38 degrees outside. The air-conditioned bus cost 180 baht and the journey took 2 hours and 40 minutes because of morning traffic leaving Bangkok. The bus was clean enough but the seats were narrow and the windows were tinted so dark you couldn't photograph the countryside. We stopped once at a roadside service area where a woman sold cold coconuts for 30 baht - that coconut was the best thing about the journey. The bus arrived at Kanchanaburi Bus Station on Lak Mu Road and I still had to find a songthaew to the town centre. If you're choosing between train and bus, take the train. It's cheaper, the windows open, and you cross the River Kwai bridge from the tracks. The bus just deposits you in a car park.

Is Kanchanaburi the Right Day Trip for You?

Book this if...

  • You want nature and history in one day - Erawan Falls delivers the scenery, the Bridge and Death Railway deliver the story
  • You're comfortable with a long day - 2.5–3 hours each way; a small-group tour handles the logistics so you don't have to coordinate train schedules and songthaews
  • You can go on a weekday - the train is less crowded, Erawan is quieter, and the Bridge over the River Kwai feels more solemn without weekend crowds

Skip this if...

  • You only have half a day - Kanchanaburi is not a half-day destination; Ayutthaya is closer and fits a tighter schedule
  • You're visiting April–May at peak heat - the hike to tier 7 in 38°C is punishing, and the train has no air-con in third class
  • You'd rather skip transport logistics - getting there independently by train or bus requires comfort with Thai rural transport systems

Best transport: Small-group tour (฿1,500–3,500) for first-timers; train from Thonburi (฿100–200) for budget travellers. Journey time: 2.5–3 hours each way. Alternative: Ayutthaya temples - closer, shorter, more historically dense.
