Related comparisons and guides:

The fastest way to reach Erawan Falls from Bangkok is an organized tour, roughly 2.5 hours door-to-door from city hotels, arriving at the park by mid-morning. By public transport: take the train from Thonburi Station to Kanchanaburi town (2.5 hours), then a songthaew 65km north to Erawan National Park (1.5–2 hours). Total by public transport is 4–5 hours each way, a long day but cheaper than a guided Erawan Falls tour from Bangkok.

Kanchanaburi River Kwai waterfall tour

Option 1, Organized Tour

This is the most common approach for first-time visitors. Tours depart Bangkok around 7–8am and return by 6–7pm, timing the arrival at Erawan for mid-morning when the light is good and the crowds haven't peaked. Most tours combine the falls with the Bridge over the River Kwai and/or the Death Railway, if you only want Erawan, check the itinerary carefully or look for a falls-focused option.

What to expect on a day tour

  • Hotel pick-up from central Bangkok (usually within the BTS/MRT zone)
  • Air-conditioned minivan or coach, journey 2.5–3 hours with one comfort stop
  • Arrival at Erawan National Park around 10–11am
  • 2–3 hours at the falls (enough time to reach tier 4 or 5 comfortably)
  • Most tours include lunch near Kanchanaburi town
  • Small-group tours (max 12–15 people) are a better experience than large coach groups

💰 Tour cost and what is included

  • Standard day tour: ฿1,500–2,200 per person
  • Small-group premium: ฿2,200–3,500 per person
  • Includes: transport, park entry fee, lunch, guide
  • Excludes: tips, drinks, personal expenses
  • Book via Viator, look for highly-rated tours with 200+ reviews

⚠️ One thing to check before booking

  • Does the tour go to Erawan Falls or just the River Kwai Bridge?
  • How long is spent at the falls? Some tours rush it in 45 minutes.
  • Is park entry included or ฿300 extra per foreign adult?
  • Group size: max 12 is noticeably better than 30+

Option 2, Train + Songthaew

This is the budget option and the most rewarding if you enjoy independent travel. The train from Thonburi Station to Kanchanaburi town takes 2.5 hours and is scenic, it crosses the River Kwai on the historic bridge and passes through rural countryside. Once in Kanchanaburi town, you hire a songthaew for the 65km drive north.

Step 1: Bangkok → Kanchanaburi by train

The train departs from Thonburi Railway Station (สถานีรถไฟธนบุรี), across the river from central Bangkok. This is not Hua Lamphong, many visitors mistakenly go to the wrong station.

Kanchanaburi River Kwai tour activity
  • BTS to Wongwian Yai (S6), then taxi ฿40–60 to the station
  • Or Orange Flag boat from Tha Charoen to Thonburi side, then walk
  • Trains depart roughly 4–5 times daily, starting around 7am
  • Second-class fan: ฿100–150 | Second-class air-con: ฿180–200
  • Journey time: 2h 30m to Kanchanaburi Railway Station
  • No online booking, buy at the station counter on the day

Step 2: Kanchanaburi town → Erawan Falls by songthaew

At Kanchanaburi Railway Station, approach the local songthaew drivers clustered near the exit. Erawan Falls is a standard tourist run, drivers do this trip regularly.

  • Hire a return songthaew for the round trip: ฿800–1,200 total (negotiable, hold firm)
  • The drive is 65km each way, about 1.5–2 hours on winding mountain road
  • Agree the price and waiting time before departing, confirm in writing on your phone if needed
  • Alternatively: public songthaew from Kanchanaburi town to the park gate, then walk or songthaew from gate to falls (cheaper but less flexible)

Budget math: train + songthaew vs tour

Two people doing train + songthaew: ฿200 (train ×2) + ฿1,000 (songthaew) = ฿1,200 total / ฿600 per person, roughly half the cost of a mid-range tour. One person: ฿200 + ฿1,000 = ฿1,200, roughly the same as a budget tour once you factor in park entry fees.

The songthaew hire is the key variable, ฿800–1,200 is the range depending on your negotiation and the driver's mood. Going early (train departing 7am) and arriving at Erawan by 10am gives you maximum time at the falls before the afternoon crowds arrive.

Option 3, Bus + Local Transport

The bus from Bangkok Southern Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) to Kanchanaburi town takes 2–3 hours. From there, the same songthaew arrangement to Erawan Falls applies. The bus is less scenic than the train and involves a longer trip to the terminal from central Bangkok, but buses run more frequently and you don't need to cross the river.

Bangkok → Kanchanaburi by bus

  • Depart from Sai Tai Mai (Southern Terminal) in Taling Chan district
  • MRT Blue Line to Taling Chan, then short taxi to terminal
  • Standard bus: ฿120–150 | Air-con: ฿150–200 | VIP: ฿250–350
  • Buses every 30–60 minutes, 5am–8pm
  • Journey time: 2–3 hours depending on traffic

From Kanchanaburi Bus Station on Lak Mu Road, the songthaew arrangement to Erawan Falls is the same as from the train station, same drivers, same negotiation. If you arrive by bus in the morning, you can hire a songthaew immediately and be at Erawan within an hour.

Which option is right for you

Organized Tour Train + Songthaew Bus + Songthaew
Total cost per person ฿1,500–3,500 ฿600–1,400 ฿700–1,400
Total journey time 2.5h each way door-to-door 4–5h each way 3.5–5h each way
Best for First-time visitors, combining Erawan with Bridge or Railway Budget travellers, scenic route, independent pace Flexible travellers starting west of central Bangkok
Arrival at Erawan ~10–11am with tour group ~10am–12pm depending on train timing ~10am–1pm depending on bus departure
Effort/logistics Minimal, everything arranged Moderate, two transport connections Moderate, bus terminal + songthaew hire

Honest recommendation

If you want to combine Erawan Falls with the River Kwai Bridge and the Death Railway in one day, an organized tour is the most practical choice, coordinating all three by public transport in a single day is complex for first-time visitors.

If Erawan Falls is your primary destination, the train + songthaew approach works well. Take the early 7am train from Thonburi, hire a songthaew at Kanchanaburi station, and arrive at Erawan by 10am. You'll have the falls largely to yourself before the tour buses arrive around 11am. Leave the park by 2pm and you'll be back in Bangkok by early evening.

When you arrive at Erawan Falls

Park basics

  • Park open: 8am–4pm (last entry 3pm, sometimes 4pm in peak months)
  • Entry fee: ฿300 per foreign adult, ฿100 for Thai nationals (2026 rate)
  • Tiers 1–4: Open year-round, swimming allowed at each level
  • Tiers 5–7: May be closed during/after heavy rain, rangers assess daily
  • Time needed: Minimum 2 hours to reach tier 4 comfortably; 3–4 hours if hitting tier 7
  • What to bring: Swimsuit, towel, water shoes or grippy sandals (rocks are slippery), dry bag for phone

Weekends and Thai public holidays are busy, Erawan is one of Thailand's most visited national parks. Weekday mornings (Tuesday–Thursday) offer the best best quieter tiers, easier parking at the park gate, and more space in the natural swimming pools.

Arriving at Erawan by 8:15am on a Tuesday

July 2024 - I convinced a tour operator to let me join their driver-only departure at 5:30am from Sukhumvit. No guide, just me, the driver, and an air-conditioned van. We reached Erawan National Park at 8:15am on a Tuesday. The ticket counter had just opened. At tier 1, the water was glass-flat and turquoise. Two other people were swimming - a German couple doing laps in the largest pool. I had tier 2 to myself for 20 minutes before anyone else arrived. The fish at tier 2 were aggressive that morning - they went for my toes like they hadn't been fed. By 10:30am when I was coming down from tier 5, the lower pools had filled with tour groups and the quiet I'd experienced two hours earlier was gone. The early start is everything. It's the difference between a private swim in a jungle waterfall and a public pool.

The bridge is better after the cemetery - I learned this the hard way

My first visit to the Bridge over the River Kwai was in 2019, before I understood Kanchanaburi properly. I walked across the bridge, took photos of the steel trusses, bought a cold drink from a vendor near the tracks, and left. I thought I'd 'done' Kanchanaburi. It wasn't until November 2023 that I visited the war cemetery first - walking past nearly 7,000 graves of Allied POWs, reading the inscriptions on the headstones - and then went to the bridge. Standing on those same tracks after seeing the graves of the men who died building them changed the experience . The bridge is an engineering structure and a war grave at the same time. You can't understand that from the bridge alone. The cemetery gives the bridge its meaning. Go to the cemetery first - the one on Saeng Chuto Road, near the town centre. Then walk to the bridge.

The motorbike rental mistake at Kanchanaburi town

February 2025. I rented a Honda Wave 125 from a shop near Kanchanaburi Bus Station - 300 baht for the day, left my passport as deposit, standard procedure. I wanted the freedom to visit Erawan Falls at my own pace without negotiating songthaew rates. The road north from Kanchanaburi town to Erawan National Park is 65km of mountain curves and in February the sun was unforgiving. By kilometre 30 my face was burning despite sunscreen and my hands were cramping from gripping the handlebars on the bends. At kilometre 50 a truck overtook me on a blind corner and I pulled over to let my heart rate settle. I made it to the falls, swam, and rode back, but I wouldn't do it again. The songthaew driver knows the road and has air between you and the sun. Sometimes the local option is the right option - not the cheapest, but the one that leaves you with energy to enjoy the destination.
