Phuket Island Hopping: Phi Phi vs James Bond vs Similan Islands — Which Day Trip to Book

I've done all three. Here's my honest Phuket island hopping comparison: Phi Phi vs James Bond vs Similan Islands. Which day trip is actually worth your time and money?

I've done all three Phuket island hopping trips. Not once — multiple times, in different seasons, with different operators. And I'll tell you straight: you don't need to do all three. You need to pick one that fits your travel style, your tolerance for early mornings, and your willingness to sit on a speedboat for hours.

This isn't a "they're all amazing" guide. This is me telling you which one I'd rebook tomorrow, and which one I'd skip even if the tour was free.

I Did Both Phi Phi Islands and James Bond Island — Here's What Nobody Tells You

Let me start with the two most popular day trips from Phuket: Phi Phi and James Bond Island. I booked the Phi Phi Islands speedboat tour first, thinking it would be the highlight of my trip. It wasn't bad — but it wasn't what I expected.

The boat ride from Phuket to Phi Phi takes 45-60 minutes. That's fine. What nobody tells you is that you'll share Maya Bay with up to 40 other speedboats by 10am. I counted. The beach is stunning — white sand, turquoise water, limestone cliffs — but you're not alone. You're in a line for photos. The coral is recovering from years of damage, and Maya Bay periodically closes for reef recovery (check the Thai National Parks website for current closures).

James Bond Island (Phang Nga Bay) is a different experience entirely. It's 25km from Phuket, about 45 minutes by speedboat or 1.5 hours by big boat. I took the James Bond Island big boat tour and it was the most relaxed day I've had in Phuket. You kayak through limestone caves, float past towering karsts, and have a buffet lunch on a floating village. No snorkeling worth mentioning — the water is murky — but the scenery is genuinely unique. The tour I took included hotel pickup, lunch, and kayaking gear. No hidden costs except the 300 baht national park fee (cash only, paid on arrival).

The Phi Phi Islands Experience

Speedboat tour to Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and Bamboo Island. Best for snorkeling and beach time. Pros: stunning water, good snorkeling. Cons: crowded by 10am, long day (8 hours), Maya Bay closures possible.

Why Phi Phi Islands Nearly Won Me Over

I'll be fair: Phi Phi has incredible snorkeling. The visibility at Bamboo Island was 15-20 meters when I went in December. I saw sea turtles, reef sharks, and more clownfish than I could count. The water at Pileh Lagoon is that electric turquoise you see in photos — and it's real.

But here's the thing: the earlybird tours (5-6am departure) are the only way to beat the crowds. I did a standard 8am departure once and arrived at Maya Bay at 9:45am. The beach was packed. I spent more time queuing for photos than actually enjoying the place. The earlybird Phi Phi tour is more expensive, but if you want the empty-beach experience, it's the only option.

If you're choosing between Phi Phi and James Bond, ask yourself: do you want snorkeling or scenery? Phi Phi wins for snorkeling. James Bond wins for unique landscapes and a relaxed day. If you have kids under 10 or anyone who gets seasick, go James Bond — the big boat is stable, and the ride is shorter.

The James Bond Island Experience

Big boat tour to Phang Nga Bay, James Bond Island, and Hong Islands. Kayaking through caves, floating village lunch. Pros: relaxed, scenic, good for families. Cons: minimal snorkeling, can feel touristy at the island itself.

The Moment I Made My Decision

I went to the Similan Islands in February — dry season, perfect weather. The tour departed my hotel at 5:30am. I was on a speedboat by 7am, and we spent 1.5 hours bouncing across open ocean to reach the islands. The ride was rough. Two people on my boat threw up. The guide handed out seasickness bags before we even left the pier.

But then we arrived. The visibility was 25 meters. I snorkeled at Koh 8 and Koh 9 and saw coral gardens that made Phi Phi look like a bathtub. The fish were everywhere — schools of trevally, barracuda, and a blacktip reef shark that swam right under me. The beaches are white sand, no development, just jungle and limestone.

The catch: the day is 12-14 hours door-to-door. You leave at dawn, you return at dusk. The speedboat ride is not for anyone with back problems, pregnancy, or a weak stomach. The Similan Islands are also closed from May 16 to October 14 every year for monsoon and reef recovery — so if you're traveling in those months, it's not an option.

I chose the Similan Islands as my winner. But only for people who can handle the logistics. If you're a serious snorkeler or diver, the Similans are excellent. If you want a relaxed day with good photos, go James Bond. If you want the iconic beach experience and don't mind crowds, Phi Phi — but book the earlybird.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went

Here's everything I learned the hard way, so you don't have to:

  • National park fees are cash only. Phi Phi costs 400 baht, James Bond 300 baht, Similan 500 baht. Bring small bills. The tour price rarely includes these.
  • Similan is closed half the year. May 16 to October 14. Don't book it during monsoon — you'll either get cancelled or have a miserable ride.
  • Phi Phi tours run year-round but check Maya Bay closures. The bay has been closed periodically for reef recovery since 2018. Your tour might substitute with other islands.
  • James Bond tours run year-round with occasional monsoon cancellations. The big boat is more reliable than speedboats in rough weather.
  • Bring seasickness medication. I don't care if you've never been seasick — the open ocean between Phuket and Similan is rough. Take Dramamine 30 minutes before departure.
  • Hotel pickup varies. Some tours charge extra for pickup from Khao Lak (closer to Similan) or from remote Phuket beaches. Confirm before booking.
  • The cheapest tour is not the best. I once booked a 1,200 baht Phi Phi tour and ended up on a boat with 50 people, no air conditioning, and a rushed itinerary. The 2,500 baht tour had smaller groups, better snorkeling gear, and a guide who actually knew the reef.
  • If you want the Similans but can't handle the ride, consider the Surin Islands instead — similar snorkeling quality but closer to Phuket (1 hour speedboat) and open same season.

How to Choose: A Quick Decision Framework

I've done all three of these island hopping trips, some multiple times. Here's the framework I use when friends ask me which one to book.

If you only care about snorkeling: Similan Islands, no contest. The visibility and coral health are a clear step above Phi Phi. But this only works November to April, and you need to be OK with 12+ hours and rough speedboat rides. If Similan is closed or you can't handle the ride, Phi Phi is your answer — book the earlybird departure.

If you're traveling with family: James Bond Island by big boat. Kids love the kayaking through caves and the floating village lunch. The ride is shorter and calmer than Phi Phi or Similan. My sister brought her 6-year-old on this tour and it was the highlight of their Phuket stay — no seasickness, no rushing, just a pleasant day on the water.

If you want the best photos: James Bond Island wins for dramatic limestone karst scenery. Phi Phi wins for turquoise beach shots. Similan wins for underwater photography. Pick based on what you want in your camera roll.

If you're on a tight budget: Phi Phi has the most competition, which keeps prices down. You can find a group tour for 1,500-2,000 baht. James Bond big boat tours start around 2,000 baht. Similan is the most expensive at 3,000+ baht due to the distance and national park fees.

My personal ranking: Similan > James Bond > Phi Phi. But that's because I prioritize snorkeling and don't mind long days. If you prioritize relaxation and scenery, reverse the order. If you want the classic Thai island experience, Phi Phi delivers — just manage your crowd expectations.
